The Story Behind UWIT: From University Classrooms to Building Real-World Products

Every company has a beginning. Ours can be traced back to a university classroom in Belgrade.

UWIT was officially founded in 2023, but the experience, relationships and ideas behind it had been developing for years. Before joining forces under one name, we studied engineering, worked for other technology companies, collaborated with clients as independent developers and built software across a wide range of industries.

Eventually, we decided to bring that experience together and create a company that could do more than deliver individual development projects. We wanted to build a team capable of understanding how businesses operate, solving meaningful operational problems and developing products designed for long-term growth.

That is how UWIT began.

A Team Built on Engineering Foundations

Our team consists of educated software engineers with several years of professional experience. We studied at two of Serbia’s leading institutions for technology and mathematics: the School of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Belgrade.

Our academic backgrounds gave us strong technical foundations, but much of what defines us today came from applying that knowledge in practice.

Before establishing UWIT, we worked in software companies and independently as freelancers. These experiences exposed us to different technologies, teams, industries and ways of building products. They also taught us that successful software development requires much more than writing good code.

It requires understanding the business behind the software.

Where the Name UWIT Comes From

The name UWIT has a personal connection to our university years.

One of the courses we attended was called Uvod u veb i internet tehnologije, which translates to Introduction to Web and Internet Technologies and was commonly abbreviated as UVIT.

Years later, when we decided to establish our own company, that name naturally came back to us. With a small adaptation, UVIT became UWIT — a reference to where our journey in web technology began, but also a name that could represent where we wanted to go next.

We later gave it an additional meaning:

Unified Web & Internet Technologies.

“Unified” reflects the way we approach software development. We do not see design, engineering, infrastructure and business operations as isolated areas. A successful digital product must bring all of them together into a system that is reliable, scalable and genuinely useful.

What started as the name of a university course eventually became the name of the company through which we apply everything we have learned since then.

From Development Projects to Long-Term Partnerships

Some of our first clients came from relationships we had developed while working in the technology industry and as independent developers. Over time, those collaborations expanded and new companies joined us.

Today, we work with businesses that need more than a standard website or an isolated piece of software. In many cases, our role is to understand an existing business process, identify where time or resources are being lost and design a digital system that improves the way the company operates.

We have helped clients digitalize and automate processes related to:

• financial management and internal reporting;
• supply-chain operations;
• fleet and vehicle management;
• warehouse and inventory management;
• human resources and employee administration;
• internal communication and business workflows;
• e-commerce and online sales.

The exact solution is different for every company. Sometimes it is a focused internal tool. In other cases, it is a larger platform that connects several departments and replaces multiple disconnected systems.

Our goal is not to introduce technology simply for the sake of using technology. It is to build software that reduces manual work, improves visibility and makes a measurable difference in everyday operations.

Building Our Own Products

Client work is an important part of UWIT, but it is only one side of our story.

From the beginning, we also wanted to create our own products and startups. Building a product from the ground up requires a different kind of responsibility. It means thinking not only about development, but also about the market, users, operations, monetization and long-term scalability.

Some of the products we are currently developing include:

Talea

Talea is a platform designed to connect students and families with carefully selected music instructors. It aims to simplify the entire process of discovering teachers, scheduling lessons, managing bookings and handling payments.

The project combines marketplace technology with a clear mission: making high-quality music education easier to access and manage.

Book-a-Boat

Book-a-Boat is a booking platform for boat tours and experiences. Its purpose is to make it easier for travelers to discover and reserve activities while giving local operators better digital tools for presenting their services and managing bookings.

The project addresses a market that is often fragmented and still relies heavily on manual communication and offline processes.

Bambino

Bambino is a mobile platform for parents, initially focused on the first year of a child’s life. It is being developed as a structured educational space where parents can access useful content and guidance created with relevant professionals.

Its goal is to make reliable parenting information more accessible, organized and practical.

These products are at different stages of development, but they share the same philosophy: technology should solve a specific problem and create lasting value for the people using it.

Why We Combine Client Work and Product Development

Working with clients gives us direct insight into real operational challenges across different industries. Building our own products teaches us to think like founders and product owners rather than only as external developers.

These two sides of UWIT strengthen each other.

Our product experience helps us approach client projects with greater ownership and a stronger focus on scalability, maintainability and business outcomes. At the same time, our client work continuously exposes us to new industries, problems and opportunities.

We understand what it means to invest time and money in a product because we do it ourselves. We understand the uncertainty, trade-offs and responsibility involved in turning an idea into a working business.

That perspective shapes the way we work with every client.

What Comes Next

UWIT has grown from a shared university background into a team building software for companies and developing products of its own.

We are still at the beginning of that journey.

Through this blog, we plan to share more about the products we are building, the technical and business decisions behind them, the challenges we encounter and the lessons we learn while helping companies digitalize their operations.
